Home News General News ‘Resident Evil 3’ Remake: Game Review Capcoms Resident Evil 3 remake doesnt quite reach the heights of last years Resident Evil 2, but its undoubtedly a. Unfortunately, it also carries over but alters the original's most divisive aspect: the random appearance of the unstoppable and unkillable Nemesis. It looks a lot better, and the city has been reconfigured to be just different enough to make it feel fresh, even for people who've played the original more recently than 1999. Im a casual Medium writer starting my own publication about video games. These are more closely aligned with those of last year's Resident Evil 2 remake. You'll also have to scrounge around for ammo and other supplies while dodging incoming attacks.Īll of this is made more fun in this remake by the game's updated and more modern, intuitive controls. As with other early games in this series, you not only have to shoot zombies from the third-person perspective, but also have to solve puzzles and find keys so that you can open up new areas of the city. ![]() ![]() That makes her the best person to be when a viral outbreak turns the residents of Raccoon City into zombies. A remake of 1999's Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, Resident Evil 3 casts you as Jill Valentine, the ever capable, well-trained member of an anti-bioterrorism task force. Resistance expands its gameplay by, for example, introducing characters who are melee specialists, and giving each Survivor a skill with a long cool-down, and there’s much Machiavellian fun to be had as the evil Mastermind.Though it's not as good as the similar remake of Resident Evil 2, this updated version of a popular survival horror game does breathe new life into the 21-year-old classic. Survivors are placed under extreme time-pressures, but can buy time through positive actions such as killing enemies or healing team-mates. It is certainly distinctive, featuring four-versus-one asymmetric play, in which a group of Survivors must escape each location, while a Mastermind attempts to thwart them by spawning traps, zombies and bosses. Past attempts to add multiplayer to Resident Evil have been patchy, but Resistance has promise. This is quite a short game (as was the original), and while you can just about spin a play-through out for 15 hours or so, the presence of an achievement for speed-running through the story in less than two hours tells you a lot.Ĭapcom has tacitly acknowledged this fact by bundling the game with a separate multiplayer mode named Resident Evil Resistance. The game provides plenty of the franchise’s staple elements, against a backdrop of gloriously modernised versions of familiar locations such as the Raccoon City Police Station (here seen 24 hours before the events chronicled in Resident Evil 2). ![]() That adds to the game’s sense of ebb and flow: Carlos is armed with a powerful assault rifle, so his more action-oriented sequences involve coping with large amounts of zombies at a time, whereas Jill’s sequences judiciously mix puzzle-solving and more traditional survival-horror gameplay, in which she must make the most of scarce ammo and whatever firepower is at hand.īut the game has another central character: the seemingly indestructible Nemesis, who relentlessly pursues Jill and provides a number of boss-battles, each of which forces her to take advantage of different environmental quirks, and after which he mutates into ever-more terrifying forms. Resident Evil 3 tries to stick with the tenets of survival horror gameplay and is generally far more challenging than RE2, due to its greater focus on inventory management and ammo crafting. Once again, the company is redefining what it means to remake a game, and Jill’s struggle to survive the fall of Raccoon City is impressive on every technical level, from its visuals, to its audio, to its refined core gameplay and reworked story.
